Goldschmidt group companies Elektro-Thermit and Graw support the ambitious infrastructure project in Saudi Arabia with Thermit® welding materials and innovative measuring devices.
The recently completed and opened Riyadh Metro is one of the largest and most ambitious urban infrastructure projects in the world. Its aim is to significantly increase sustainable mobility, relieving traffic congestion in the capital of Saudi Arabia with almost 8 million inhabitants. With Thermit® welding materials and innovative measuring devices, Goldschmidt is contributing to one of the most important infrastructure developments in Saudi Arabia.
The rail network of Riyadh Metro has a total length of 176 kilometres (109 miles), comprises 85 stations and currently consists of six metro lines – one additional line and line extensions are in planning. The commissioning of all six lines was completed on January 5, 2025. Riyadh Metro will be contributing to reducing the number of car trips by nearly 250,000 a day and thus cutting fuel emissions by 400,000 liters per day.
All stations and transport facilities are designed with sustainability in mind, including the use of renewable energy and energy-efficient lighting systems.
Goldschmidt group company Elektro-Thermit, who was commissioned with the project, provides Thermit® welding materials for rail joining as well as advanced measuring devices to check track geometry and parallel to that the position of the conductor rail (Trackscan Metro trolleys), developed and produced by inspection solutions specialist GRAW. The high level of satisfaction with the solutions already led to a major follow-up order of Trackscan Metro.
